What about heterologous protection?

Because PRRS shows such ability to mutate, the natural question arises: Can a mass-vaccination program protect animals if a differing strain is introduced? Data from nine independent trials indicate that vaccination with either Ingelvac® PRRS MLV or Ingelvac® PRRS ATP provides consistent and significant reduction of lung damage — regardless of the PRR-Schallenge strain used in the trial.

Vaccine reduced PRRS-induced gross lung pathology in all nine trials, showing from 54 percent to 97 percent reduction in gross lesions as compared to non-vaccinated challenge controls.

In addition, research conducted by veterinary pathologist Pat Halbur through Iowa State's Veterinary Diagnostic Lab demonstrates Ingelvac PRRS ATP made a significant contribution to protecting infected pigs from PRRS-induced lung damage as well as improving average daily gain and a significant reduction of viremia in the presence of highly virulent heterologous challenge.
