Simultaneous Use of Oral Vaccines
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) permits the simultaneous use of Enterisol Ileitis FF, Enterisol SC-54 FF and Ingelvac® ERY-ALC vaccines. Now all three oral vaccines may be used at the same time, when administered through drinking water.
This new application of oral vaccine technology allows producers to save the time and labor expenses associated with traditional, injectable vaccinations.
According to Dr. Jeff Husa, Professional Services Veterinarian, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, when simultaneously administering any two or three of the oral vaccines, it’s critical to make sure that the timing of each individual vaccine is appropriate for the disease situation.
A stipulation of usage is this, says Husa: there are no antimicrobials compatible during vaccination with any combination of two or three oral vaccines. That means simultaneous use requires withdrawal of all antimicrobials around the time of vaccination. Feeding an antimicrobial during vaccination is only possible if oral salmonella or erysipelas vaccine is used alone, says Husa. And then the specific antimicrobial selected must be compatible with the specific vaccine used. Boehringer has a list of compatible antibiotics for Enterisol SC-54 FF and Ingelvac ERY-ALC vaccines.
