Simultaneous Use of Oral Vaccines Approved

Recently, the United States Department of Agriculture approved the simultaneous use of Enterisol® Ileitis FF, Enterisol SC-54 FF and Ingelvac® ERY-ALC vaccines. As a result, producers can now administer two or three of the oral vaccines at the same time through the drinking water.

This newly approved simultaneous application of oral vaccines not only allows producers to save the time and labor expenses associated with traditional injectable vaccines, it also allows them the convenience of consolidating the administration of up to three products at one time.

John Waddell, DVM with Sutton Veterinary Clinic, Sutton, Neb., says approval of the simultaneous use of oral vaccines has been rapidly accepted and utilized by producers in his area. “Many of our production managers are simultaneously vaccinating large groups of pigs against Lawsonia, salmonella and erysipelas in the late nursery stage with great success,” Waddell explains. “As a result, pigs are going into the grower/finisher units in much better shape, and the managers of these units are seeing fewer problems and improved performance.”

However, Waddell says timing of the vaccinations is the critical factor for administering the three products at the same time. “Timing of the vaccination is the one thing that has to be managed correctly to ensure effective disease protection is achieved,” he adds. “It’s important that producers follow the medication-free feed and other guidelines and label recommendations.

“But for many of our production units, the use of oral vaccines and the ability to administer them at the same time plays an important role in their disease management programs.”
