Learning tools to simplify oral vaccination
Oral vaccination is a new practice for many producers and their staff. Faster, less stress on pigs and people, it may seem a bit unfamiliar because the routine of a syringe and needle is gone. Covering a few key points can make all the difference.
Benefits flow to simple steps
Three key points to delivering oral vaccines.
Measure consumption — Measure “stock solution” intake (using plain tap water) for a four-hour period, at 24 hours before the time of vaccination.
Use Ready Packs
™ — These handy packs neutralize chlorine and allow viewing drinking water with vaccine. Use Ready Packs™ when vaccinating, not before or after.Bleed the water lines — Be sure to run water from the furthest drinker(s) away from the medicator to prime all drinking lines with vaccine.
Past issues of Insight have detailed the feed medications that may be of concern with various oral products.
Flow charts, videos and e-learning
Several technical bulletins are available that take the process from text to flow charts or video. Your Boehringer Ingelheim representative, local veterinarian or distributor sales person can provide these for you, or may be available to assist you for the first application of an oral vaccine.
In addition to these materials, a new video session detailing oral vaccination steps will soon be available from Boehringer Ingelheim. Moderated by Dr. Steve Henry, a noted swine practitioner, it reviews all the steps needed to accurately deliver an oral vaccine to a group of pigs.
