Newly published research demonstrates value of Enterisol Ileitis oral vaccination
A study published earlier this year in the American Veterinary Medical Association's prestigious American Journal of Veterinary Research demonstrates the protective value of vaccinating nursery pits by drench or drinking water with Enterisol Ileitis avirulent live vaccine against Lawsonia intracellularis.
The study showed that pigs receiving a single dose of vaccine were protected when challenge exposed with virulent L. intracellularis not of the same origin as the vaccine strain. In two experiments, vaccinated pigs exposed to the bacteria excreted significantly less Lawsonia in the feces than did unvaccinated pigs that were also exposed. The percentage of vaccinated pigs that suffered damaging macroscopic and microscopic lesions caused by Lawsonia infection in their guts was significantly reduced by vaccination.
The severity of those lesions was also significantly reduced by vaccination, the study found. The average score for macroscopic lesions was significantly higher, meaning the lesions were more severe, in the ileum (2.55) and colon (0.75) of unvaccinated pigs than in those tissues for either the water-delivery (0.2 and 0.2, respectively) or drench (0.6 and 0.2, respectively) vaccinates. Similarly, the average severity scores for microscopic lesions in the colon were significantly reduced in both vaccinated groups — at 0.15 for water-vaccinated and 0.25 for drenched pigs — compared with the average score for the unvaccinated group, at 0.7.
The percentage of gut tissue samples that demonstrated positive results for Lawsonia was significantly lower for both the vaccinated groups when compared with the unvaccinated pigs.
Although researchers found no significant difference in the degree of clinical signs of disease between the groups, between three weeks and six weeks after vaccination, the vaccinated pigs gained significantly more weight daily than those not protected in the face of challenge.
