Studies demonstrate third-trimester safety
To meet the licensing requirements for use in pregnant sows in PRRS-positive farms, researchers administered Ingelvac PRRS MLV to third-trimester sows in three different U.S. locations. The third trimester is considered the most critical in reference to the PRRS-related clinical disease.
At Missouri, Illinois and Nebraska test farms, the studies randomly assigned pregnant sows or gilts to two treatment groups based upon parity number and week of gestation. The principal group was vaccinated with a field dose of lngelvac PRRS MLV; control animals were similarly treated with a placebo. Investigators made clinical observations at two hours post injection and once daily until farrowing. They then monitored reproductive performance at farrowing and piglet performance and deathloss through weaning.
Averaged across the trials, the results demonstrated the safety of Inglevac PRRS MLV even when used in the critical third trimester. Results showed no statistically significant difference between vaccinated sows and unvaccinated sows in percent pigs born live, percent pigs weaned or piglet weight gain.
These studies were done to obtain a USDA-APHIS label claim for “whole-herd” vaccination in PRRS-positive farms with Ingelvac PRRS MLV.
