Enterisol Ileitis hits a home run

Performance impact of ileitis
Ileitis damages the lining of the small and large intestines. The cells of the intestine react to infection by proliferating. The result is an inflamed and thickened gut. Pigs utilize nutrients less efficiently. In severe cases, pigs may even bleed out into the intestine, with high mortality.
McOrist estimated the impact of ileitis in several experiments. Pigs were left untreated to estimate the full impact of ileitis infection on performance. Growth rates were reduced from 10% to 30%. Feed gain increased 6% to 25%. The estimated impact ranged from $2.50 to $10.50 increased production cost per pig. Remember that this does not include any treatment costs. The effect of market weight on sort loss, number of pigs in the top market window, and other revenue impacts were excluded!
Positive protection
When properly vaccinated, you know pigs are protected. When relying on continuous feed antibiotics, that long-term immunologic protection will probably not be present. What will happen if the continuous medications are ever removed? You don't know! What you do know is that pigs don't have the ongoing protection of immunity. Immunization allows you to use medications strategically, and only when needed, rather than “masking” or delaying problems with continuous antibiotics (see Ileitis Control Process chart).
Benefit/Cost performance
Any intervention must pay for itself. This sounds simple, but often we forget to measure the results of management and health changes. In real world field trials, Enterisol Ileitis has improved growth rate and allowed for reduced medication expenses. Enterisol Ileitis vaccinated pigs have demonstrated Benefit/Cost ratios from 3:1 to >12:1 over popular feed medications that control ileitis. That's a 200% to 1100% profit in less than six months! That's an improvement in your top line and your pigs' enteric health.
