ILEITIS VACCINE DO'S AND DON'TS
Following is a vaccine handling checklist to aid Enterisol
When vaccine is received, check to ensure it is still frozen solid and dry ice pellets remain in the cooler. Place the entire shipper box, including the remaining dry ice, in the freezer.
Never store the vaccine longer than one week in a regular freezer.
When ready to use, remove vaccine bottles from the freezer and place in pan or pail; put the pan in a sink and slowly trickle cold water through the pan for 30 to 40 minutes or until vaccine is thawed. Never microwave vaccine and never pre-thaw. Shake well before using.
Assure the water system is free of leaks or restrictions. Turn off chlorinators, acidifiers and peroxide units. Proportioner preventive maintenance kits are available from their respective manufacturers and should be used during regularly scheduled maintenance.
All medicated feed must be removed at least three days before and three days after vaccination. Removal of medicated feed a week following vaccination is ideal. Take and keep composite feed samples from several feeders on the day of vaccination in case later testing for antibiotic contamination is necessary.
The day before vaccination, measure the amount of water passing through the proportioner in a four-hour period during the same time of day you plan to vaccinate. This is the total volume of vaccine-containing stock solution needed to prepare the next day and the amount that pigs should consume in four to six hours.
Once the stock solution is mixed and supplied to proportioners, bleed lines by opening either a drinker or a spigot at the end of the barn farthest from the proportioner until the blue-dyed water appears. Check periodically to make sure vaccine is still being delivered.
