Tips for using oral vaccines
Using oral vaccination saves time and money! It also follows PQA guidelines by reducing the need for medications and injections. For many producers though, the first time vaccinating pigs without a syringe in hand can be a little scary. A couple of simple rules can calm those fears.
- Use appropriate feed medications for the oral vaccine you are using. See Sidebar — Application.
- Measure drinking water consumption! Pigs drink more water after feeding, so measure water consumption the day before vaccination, at the same time you'll give vaccine.
- Use a Ready Pack
™ DT or Reload Pack™ DT from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., to neutralize any chlorine in water and visualize vaccine-containing drinking water. Turn off chlorinators if in use. - Drain the end of the water line until water with vaccine fills the entire overhead water line.
- Vaccinate over a minimum four-hour period. Don't exceed eight hours.
Oral vaccination is safe, easy and a labor saver! Pigs like it too! With a few simple steps, population vaccination will save time and money, and help pigs perform their best without unnecessary continuous medication and stressful injections.
